710 years ago today, Friday October 13, 1307, King of France Philip the IV and Pope Clement V had all possible Knights Templar in France arrested in surprise raids throughout the country. It has been speculated by many, most notably author John Robinson in Born In Blood, that the Knights Templar that escaped (and most did escape) went into hiding. Their need for mutual safety and support, and the system set up to provide it, evolved into what is now Freemasonry.
True or not, it is a fascinating concept. If you have not read Born In Blood, I highly recommend it. There is a copy in our Lodge library (if someone doesn’t have it checked out), and I’m sure it’s available for purchase online. If you borrow the Lodge copy you’ll have to put up with my highlights and notes on the pages.
By the way, John Robinson was not a Freemason when he wrote that book or A Pilgrim’s Path (also in the Lodge library), but became one after completing A Pilgrim’s Path.
My piece of Masonic education for the day.
